pink limousine

The pink limo. A lot of the fandom likes to hate the pink limo that Relena is seen riding around in, almost as much has they like to hate her! Though I find the limo fairly amusing to see in the first place: Wing Gundam. Leos. Pink limousine. I'm going to use what I know about Wing and the symbolism that is put throughout it to try to explain that the limo might mean more than just a pink car. It's fun to think about, if the limo really does have deeper meaning or is just a joke from the creators.

My argument is: it's supposed to be a symbol for Relena and it all ties into her age and up bringing. The color pink is usually identified with young girls; it's a symbol of innocence and being carefree from the troubles of the world. This is how Relena lived when we first see her in the show, a 15-year-old girl not caring about the war torn world around her. Unlike the five Gundam pilots that have been forced to grow up wihout a peaceful adolecence, Relena had never been forced to take on huge responsibilities. So it's not until her father dies that she's finally forced to start growing up. Yet we still continue to see the pink car through out her time in the Cinq Kingdom. So even if she's starting to change, grow up and finally take on the responsibility of teaching her family's pacifist ways, she still maintains that young innocence from the rest of the characters. She hasn't killed anyone or thinks that peace will come through wars, she continues to believe that peace can be obtained through discarding weapons. She remains very idealistic through the end of the series, not willing to see the faults in her ways. It's not until Endless Waltz she finally understands that she can't just preach ideas unless the people themselves are willing to take action on their own.
On the flip side, she's a 15-year old, who is able to have not only her own personal driver, but her own car. And its a limosine on top of that. I think any girl in Relena's position would pick something awfully girly in a car-- and I have a feeling picking something so "cute" and childish was probably expected from her by her classmates.

Relena's car isn't the only vehicle of note in Wing. Aside from the various mobile suits stomping around,
the car driven by Dorothy Catalonia is hard to ignore. Dorothy dives a monsterious 8-wheeled, gold colored limoumine which she is always shown driving herself. Dorothy also seems to always be speeding and in a hurry to get where she is going. A large contrast to Relena whom is much more subdued, especially when it comes to traveling.
This might best be looked as a way to represent not just their drastict different personalities, but have something to do with each of their views on the war. Dorothy likes to be bold and
very open about her love for war and in taking action being the only solution to it. While Relena doesn't find any joy in battles or bloodshed, very much a pacifist in all ways. It's a very
unique way to sort of compare these two very different girls.
