everything is born from the stars
This is Moonflower a small dedication for Sailor Moon's final form, Sailor Cosmos. While she appears in her true form in only the manga version of the series, her appearance and existence raises many questions to the continuity of the Sailor Moon timeline and if its possible her future might not be the future that awaits our Usagi after her reign as Neo Queen Serenity. This is a one-page shrine created specifically for the Amassment One Page Shrine Event, even so this shrine will be as in-depth as possible and will contain spoilers for the very end of the Sailor Moon manga and anime.
Deep Submerge Directory, AmassmentWho is Sailor Cosmos?
This is a question asked first in the final chapter: Act 52 by the Sailor Quartet when they enter the Cordon to aid Eternal Sailor Moon's plea only to find Sailor Cosmos there standing by the Cordon amidst the Star Seeds returning back to their respective planets. Up until the final two acts of the series, we knew Sailor Cosmos only by her Earthen disguise of Chibi Chibi until she finally reveals her true form to Eternal Sailor Moon in Act 51.
"Are you... are you the future? The ultimate Sailor Moon!?"During her chance meeting with the Sailor Quartet, Cosmos finally reveals to them and the reader of who she is. She is from the future, to which Sailor Ceres asks if she is the "ultimate Sailor Moon." But Cosmos never answers her question, only to go on to tell them why it is she has returned to the past.
Sailor Cosmos came from her future to the past because she was too scared and hopeless to continue to fight against Sailor Chaos any longer. Everyone she knew and loved is dead in her time, and having given up hope, she arrived in the past to somehow fix the "mistakes" she herself made during her first battle with Chaos and redo everything over. This part of the reasoning why she took the form of Chibi Chibi while on Earth. As a way to get close to Usagi, to support and help her make, what Cosmos believed, was the right choice this time around: to destroy the Cordon and kill Chaos for good.
"But I realized, I had already chosen the right path. No one can destroy the place where stars are born. We can live because this place exists."
But Sailor Cosmos was proven wrong in her beliefs and finally discovered she'd made the right choice the first time, not to destroy the Cordon or Chaos. If she had, no more stars or souls would be born into the world, and even if the Cordon was reborn in another galaxy eventually, Chaos would never be destroyed completely. With new found strength and hope, thanks to Eternal Sailor Moon's sacrifice, Cosmos decides to stop running away from her problems and her future. Deciding to return to the future, knowing she can do everything over, just as Sailor Moon has.
Cosmos' Apperance and Uniform

First to note is her hair color. It has become all white, same as Neo Queen Serenity's during her reign in the 30th Century. This is possible evidence that Usagi will become Sailor Cosmos after her time as queen and regain her powers to transform into a Sailor Soldier. Her hairbuns have also changed shaped, from circular to a heart-like shape. The hairbun covers still remain, but are white with golden accent along the outside. Cosmos still wears hair wings like Super and Eternal Sailor Moon, but there is now added pearls at the bottom of each wing.
A very noticeable change is the lack of a crescent moon on Cosmos' forehead, but that of an eight-point starburst instead. There is no explanation for this change or its meaning in the manga. It could be assumed that it means Cosmos has transferred all connections of the Moon Kingdom and being Serenity onto Chibiusa before this time, and she has somehow "evolved" into a whole new form. There is also a small pearl circlet which seems fall across her bangs and "connect" at the starburst.
Her choker matches with a all white band and a yellow starburst in the center.
There is so a complete lack of a ribbon on her breasts like former outfits. Instead there is a sole breastpiece or compact. Its hard to give the item a certain name because Sailor Cosmos might not even have her Sliver Moon Crystal any longer, or it has transformed into a new form all together (Cosmos Crystal?). There is also the possibility that Sailor Cosmos is neither Usagi Tsukino or Serenity at this time, but her single and only form is Sailor Cosmos and therefore no longer has to transform.
Her sleeves have reverted back to how they were with Sailor Moon's first 3 transformations, this time yellow instead of white and matching wings and pearl accents on the sides which poke out. Her sailor collar has turned all white, with lines of either black or blue, which varies from artwork to artwork. The bodice is seamless, with no separation under the breasts or at the waistline. This is also the only form which doesn't include gloves of any sort.
The skirt is all white and pleated with a front panel featuring a ribbon like rainbow down from the waistline. It also features a winged motif piece on the front that matches Cosmos' breastpiece. There are two long transparent ribbons that hang down out from the piece and this costume lacks any decorations or ribbons on the backside.
On each of her fingers, Cosmos wears matching pearl rings. Her earrings have become pearls as well, looking similar to the earrings Sailor Mercury had worn, but Cosmos' also drop down to hang off the earlobe.
Her shoes are white stiletto heals with the matching wing/pearl accents out from the heal, as with her hair and sleeves.
Sailor Cosmos also wears a long, flowing pure white cape off her shoulders. This cape seems to disappear once her wings appear right before the last page she appears on. Its uncertain if the cape just falls off when this happens or if its actually another form of Cosmos' wings when they are not apparent; her wings are in fact the cape itself.

Her Mysterious Powers
Both as Chibi Chibi and in her true form, Cosmos seems to have the power of teleportation. She was able to send herself to the past on her own, as well as being able to transport Sailor Chibimoon and her Quartet from Earth to where the Cordon is. Her final act of power is sending the Sailor Quartet back to their own time before leaving herself.
When transformed as Sailor Chibi Chibi, she also seems to be able to create some sort of barrier from attacks. She used this power to protect both Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibimoon at different points in the manga.
Her most obvious power, is that of disguise. Cosmos is able to come to Earth as Chibi Chibi while still being able to use her powers to some extent and transform into a sailor soldier.
As Cosmos and Sailor Chibi Chibi, she also welds a staff. Sailor Cosmos' staff stands at about her height, or slightly taller. It seems, similar to Sailor Pluto, she wields the staff at all times and it is the basis of all her powers and/or attacks. At the top of the staff sits a large sphere with wings, pearls and the matching starburst. It compliments the breast and waist pieces of her costume.
Sailor Chibi Chibi's staff is similar, except that it has a large heart at the top with ring around it; going along with Chibi Chibi's heart motifs on her sailor uniform.
The extent of her powers past teleportation, disguse and shielding is not shown in the manga. It is uncertain if Sailor Cosmos' main source of power is still her crystal and we are only told about her battles with Sailor Chaos and are given no idea about just how powerful this ultimate form is.
Disgused as Chibi Chibi
Sailor Cosmos first arrives in the present in the form of a little girl named Chibi Chibi in Act 44 of the manga. She floats down from the sky by umbrella, finding Princess Kakyuu (and keeping her safe inside an incense burner while she healed her body) before going to the Tsukino residence soon after and making Usagi's family believe she is Usagi's younger sister, much as Chibiusa had with them before.
Because of her appearance, the other Soldiers first assume she might be Chibiusa's daughter from the future (being that Usagi isn't able to have more than 1 child). Her hair is a darker pink than Chibiusa's (shown as more red in the anime), with her hairbuns in the shape of hearts. She is also tiny, reaching no higher than Usagi's knee/thigh when standing.
In the chapters following her introduction, Chibi Chibi speaks in short sentences or saying only "chibi chibi," until in later chapters when she beings speaking normally to the Sailor Starlights and Eternal Sailor Moon. As Chibi Chibi she acts like nothing more than a child, but the others seem to sense she holds a mysterious power similar to Sailor Moon's inside
As Chibi Chibi, Cosmos uses this form to stay close to Usagi, as well to help and protect her against the slew of attacks by Galaxia's minions. She also returns Princess Kakyuu back to her Starlights half way through the arc.
"Don't help her. This is Sailor Moon's battle. A battle that will... determine the fate of the galaxy."
Chibi Chibi can also transform into a Sailor Soldier; Sailor Chibi Chibi [Moon], the 'moon' ending added on in the anime and the reprint mangas. She protects Eternal Sailor Moon numerous times with her staff against attacks as Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon. She was also able to help transport Sailor Chibimoon and the Sailor Quartet from Earth to where Eternal Sailor Moon and the Starlights where.
Apperance in the anime?
During the final episode of the anime, when Chibi Chibi is finally revealed to be Galaxia's star seed and "The Light of Hope," there is a brief moment where a shadowed figure talks with Usagi. They tell her they are the Light of Hope, lending Usagi their power and transforms into a sword to help defeat Chaos Galaxia with. This figure has surpising similarity with Sailor Cosmos, with the flowing cape-like outfit and long hair similar to Usagi & Sailor Cosmos'. Its impossible to prove either way that this is Sailor Cosmos because of Chibi Chibi's compeltely different origins in the anime version, being Galaxia's star seed and even if it was 'Sailor Cosmos,' this version would be very different than her manga conterpart. Sadly, Sailor Cosmos does not fit in with the anime's continuity and storyline in Sailor Stars and this little scene might be the animators nod to Sailor Cosmos, because of Takeuchi Naoko's wish that Cosmos could of been featured in the anime as she was seen in the manga.
Is Sailor Cosmos a symbol?
The power to lose everything... and the power to save everything. The ultimate power that I was forgetting. It is this quote that Sailor Cosmos says in junction with proving that it is Eternal Sailor Moon who is "Sailor Cosmos' true form." This alone brings up many questions to "who" Sailor Cosmos really is. Its possible that its less a physical characteristic, but that of the soul and a power inside. Eternal Sailor Moon sacrificed herself into the Cordon to defeat Chaos and save the galaxy; her actions alone in the final two chapters seem to surprise Sailor Cosmos greatly, as if Eternal Sailor Moon's actions were new and Cosmos had never gone through them herself.
Cosmos' words seem to imply that even though she is 'Sailor Cosmos,' she still hadn't recieved the "power to lose and save everything," which is probably the reason for her giving up hope and running to the past. Unlike Eternal Sailor Moon, who even after the death of Mamoru into the Cordon and Sailor Galaxia, would no give up hope because everyone had believed in her; Sailor Cosmos had been unable to believe in herself any longer or believe in a future beyond fighting. It is not until Eternal Sailor Moon tells her never to give up hope in their future, that Sailor Cosmos finally understands and finds her renewed will to continue to fight.
This question of, if Sailor Cosmos is more of an ideal than an actual person is a legitimate one. Cosmos speaks of herself as being less of a person than Eternal Sailor Moon, telling the Sailor Quartet she [Sailor Moon] is "Sailor Cosmos' true form." It seems that there is not a physical or even a time/space limit to when Sailor Moon can become Sailor Cosmos, it all depends on Sailor Moon's actions, decisions and selflessness in battle to when she can truly harness the power and what it means to be "Sailor Cosmos." The person who is able to lose everything in her life, but still never giving up hope or the will to fight to save everything in the end.
From an Alternate Future?
When the future is spoken of in Sailor Moon, it is always hard to understand how the futures work, are they connected or are there more than one future for the current Sailor Moon? Just the Dark Moon arc alone, brings up the question that being that the past came to the future to destroy a future threat, that when our Usagi does become the queen of the 30th century, that she won't have to defeat the Dark Moon again? Or if she does, does that mean she won't need the past to come and save the future again because they all know what to expect this time around? No questions like these have any clear answer and are all speculation, which is where the existence of Sailor Cosmos' future comes into question.
Its obvious that the Cosmos we are introduced to, is much weaker willed than Eternal Sailor Moon of our time, and even says that Eternal Sailor Moon is the true Sailor Cosmos. Could it be possible the future has already diverted from one where everyone but Cosmos will die? There are small inconsistencies, such as Neo Queen Serenity giving Sailor Moon the Spiral Heart Moon Rod, though if she was from the future, wouldn't she of given Sailor Moon the Eternal Tiare if her final transformation was Eternal Sailor Moon before becoming Queen? Is it possible that the Neo Queen we know of never became Eternal Sailor Moon?
It's impossible to know for certain how Cosmos came to be, just how similar were the things which Sailor Moon went through and herself. While they both seemed to of had to made the choice to save the Cordon, Eternal Sailor Moon's actions seem to be very different than Cosmos' when she was Sailor Moon.
Yet, Cosmos coming there to the past doesn't seem to change the future which she is returning to. While the current and the 30th century seem to be connected to actions in the past (Mamoru and the other soldiers dying affects their future counterparts), Eternal Sailor Moon making the choices she has, and even being called Sailor Cosmos' true form; might be some inclination that Cosmos and Sailor Moon's futures are not linear. Sailor Cosmos seems to be a very different Usagi than we are used to, without the power to soldier on no matter what, and its possible she is a future in which Usagi/Sailor Moon wasn't able to find the strength in herself to save the world no matter what the losses. It's hard to believe that after seeing everyone die during the battle with Galaxia and Chaos, that if in the future our Usagi was to face the same battles as Sailor Cosmos, that she wouldn't show the same unwavering strength as she already as, no matter what.
An interesting note, that might help with the theory of an alternate future is that Cosmos, when refering to her past actions uses "I," but she never once talks or address Usagi/Sailor Moon as if talking about herself, but as another person, using "she." There is this distinction between Cosmos and the present Usagi and if the past Sailor Moon was really just her, then why wouldn't she talk about Sailor Moon as "herself," if it wasn't that they were not one in the same?
"I had so many regrets, so.. I came back.. to do everything over. The me of here, too was alone and suffering."
Cosmos in Ancient Greek
In its most general sense, a cosmos is an orderly or harmonious system. It originates from a Greek term meaning "ordered world" and is the antithetical concept of chaos. Today the word is generally used as a synonym of the word Universe (considered in its orderly aspect).Takeuchi Naoko uses many ancient Greek mythologies without her manga and its use with Sailor Cosmos is no exception. While cosmos was order, chaos was first meant the initial state of the universe, and, by extension, space, darkness, or an abyss. Sailor Moon being the light, hope and order for the universe and Sailor Chaos being the dark, death and destruction.
So in the same token, Sailor Cosmos' battle with Sailor Chaos can be seen as an allegorical struggle between order and disorder. The ancient Greeks used the word kosmos to refer to order and to the universe. Some Roman writers took the ancient Greek word khaos, spelled it chaos, and used it to refer to the confused, formless, primitive mass out of which the universe was made. In Sailor Cosmos' own time, she fights for good and order of the universe. Sailor Chaos, on the other hand, fights for evil and disorder.
