special relationship
As I've already given a canon subjective look on America's relationship with England is the England Section of the shrine, this essay is going to cover a more deeper look and more shipper's view on their relationship. If you're uninterested in these two as a couple, that is understandable; but USA & UK's special relationship is something worth writing about. Its obvious that England still cares deeply about his former charge. Himaruya has written his character into the tsundere archetype to help highlight England's torn feelings for America. I think that its obvious that England is still hurt over the events that happened during the Revolutionary War between the two of them, this is probably why when he opens up to America about his feelings he quickly pulls back when he's about to or is rejected by America. I think England is a very fragile, emotional wise. Himaruya has given us more than enough examples of his self-isolation from the other nations and the mistreatment he receives from France, his older brothers and his own bosses and leaders. When he finally got love and affection from a colonial America and then gets seemingly thrown away in the end as America gains his own independence, its a surprise that England is still in love with America post-1778.
Maybe England still believes that America has affection for him? America's feelings for England seem much more complicated because America seems even less open with his feelings (especially towards England) than the older nation with his own. America suffers from his own case of tsundere with England, though the reasons why he does are probably much different than England. I'm sure that America still worries at times that England still sees him as a child (though in many ways he still is) and he's fought for his independence from England because he wanted to be seen on the same level. England is still own time to time to be mildly-obsessed with how America used to be when he was British America and I'm sure that holds America back from wanting to admit feelings to even himself. If he is openly affectionate with England, will he continue to only see him as that little colony he used to be?
Reasons like these are probably why these two have only been able to become friends again post-WW2. When does England stop looking at him as a child and begin to see the strong nation he has become? When does America not see England as an older brother or father figure, but as another nation? The lines are blurred greatly and it's harder to ever be able to pin-point a change in either of them.
Can they become lovers? There is certainly a possibly for them. Deliberately or not, America and England never address one another as anything but their names. Unlike the Italy brothers or even Germany and Prussia, they do not give each other any type of pet-name or call one another "brother." I think this makes an important distinction for these two. While England did raise America from childhood, he never wanted to be called 'big brother.' While this is a trauma from his own experiences of having brothers, I think England wanted less another family member, as just needing someone to love and to love him in return; and America does just that for him.
America needed to grow up and pull away from England is there was any hope for things to change between them. You can see the little growing playfulness between the two of them in the more modern strips. In an early strip you see England choke America when he pissed him off (England is the only one to he so physical with America through out Hetalia) and in the 2009 Christmas strips, England only gives his cheeks a squeeze. There's much less hostility between them, which could be easily seen as a relationship between the two.
America and England have probably some of the most appealing chemistry than most of the other characters. Their personalities are so different, and yet they compliment one another perfectly. England needs America's hyperness to rub up against his usual boring stodginess. These two just work together perfectly. Of course, they seem to know and understand one another better than a lot anyone else. While France can push England's buttons all too easily, its only America who can embarrass and fluster him quite so easily. And its always England that America seems to run to, need his attention or want to speak to.
They're also both kind of jerks. There's not many people who seem to like either of them in the comics. England is a loner, keeping to himself and mostly enjoying the company of his "imaginary friends." He's an ex-punk, erotic ambassador, socially awkward and really just not that friendly or personable. America is loud, annoying, caught up in his own world and ideas and likes to butt-in to other people's problems. None of the other nations specifically reach out to be their friends, and yet America and England are really drawn to each other even so. Not many other nations could really put up with either of them expect for each other.
