Welcome to the Hamburger Street
the united states of america
America and England's relationship has defiantly had it ups and downs through the years as they've known one another, but at the very basis of all the fighting and arguments, they are the best of friends. Only close friends as America and England can argue and insult one another so constantly and yet still smile and laugh with one another minutes later.Their relationships starts during the 1600s when England and France (and other European countries) come to the new world and discover the North American continent. After much fighting between France and England, America is given the choice to choose which country he would rather become the 'little brother' of. He decides on England on the end, for the soul reason that basically he feels bad for the older nation who starts to cry because he can never win over France.
Towards the end of the "The Battle for America" strips, we're not just given a first glimpse at America's super human strength, but also that he's fared very well on his own up until this point. But of course, that aside, America's growing fondness for England (and growing reliance on him) is best shown in "Parting time and America", where a young America begins to cry over England leaving. He says that "being alone in such a big place is scary," and that he'll "be sad and lonely." England only promises that he'll be back soon, only to return to see America has grown even taller than him now.
It can almost be said that England might of needed America more than the colony had needed him. In a way to combat his own loneliness and not being liked or loved by anyone in Europe. When he visits America, he's able to feel wanted and relied on.
It's also shown during "England's cooking and America", that its England's fault for America's lack of taste in food.
America and England come to a head in the late 1770s when the American Revolutionary War begins. The two of them fight of course England losing in the end; shown in "Cleaning Out the Storage" as England surrendering to America because he's unable to take the final shot that would defeat America.
Their relationship following the war isn't covered in Hetalia (such as the War of 1812) but when they are shown together again, it isn't until the mid-1800s when America is asked for befriend whales in "Black Ships have Come." England has begun to show his 'tsundere' ways towards America at this point, though doesn't seem to hold bitterness towards America because he willing asks America if he wants to he his friend, but its shot-down and laughed off by America. They're not friends again here, at the best its a one-sided hope from England to become close again, but America seems to have little interest in England.
Yet when the 20th century rolls around, their relationship seems to have improved, with England bringing Lithuania over to America's house. They do show some civilized movements together when England comes to check up on Lithuania, though we are shown America's new actions beginning to spite England. Such as serving him coffee only, knowing England hates it. It can almost being taken that England is slightly jealous that America and Lithuania can live together and get long so well during this time.
The 'Cleaning Out the Storage' strips are able to show us that America has his own slight tsundere side towards England too. Though he supposedly "hates" or "dislikes" England greatly now, he is unable to throw away any of his old storage items because they remind him of his childhood. Even becoming hetic and embarrassed when Lithuania finds on old toy soldier, needing him to hurry up and hide it because England is coming. He's almost unwilling to want to admit he's still holding onto that past just as much as England does.
Their relationship during the course of WW2 seems to have them at their throats most constantly. England shows his various tsundere moods towards America, who America as various times seems to use England's feelings to take a jab at him and to make fun of him. America calling England old and for the most part ignoring anything England might have to say and England yelling at him, constantly calling him stupid. They're finally fighting on the same side after once being enemies and tensions are high (Because Hetalia doesn't cover WW1, its impossible to have any say on how they acted during that time).
But as the comic goes on, you can see an underlying friendship starting through the bickering between the two, with America calling for England at different times, wanting to talk to him or show him a new airplane. They don't stop their small quarrels, though it does get hard at times to tell when America is being sincere or just doing something because he knows it will get at England's nerves.
As Hetalia's timeline gets close and closer to the present, they seem to become close friends. With England staying over at America's house in "England and the Ghost at America's House" and even England coming all the way to America on the 4th of July to give America a birthday present (even if the occasion does make him sick and unable to do things).
Certainly by the 2009 Christmas strips, their relationship is probably at its best, with England doing probably his least violent attack on America's stupidity, only giving his cheeks a squeeze. They are surely friends again by now. And while their relationship will never be able to be the same it used to be, they are able to become close friends (maybe even best) as Hetalia's timeline comes into the present.
